How to Craft and Use the Thumper in Breathedge 2
Craft the Breathedge 2 Thumper with Metal x4 and Plastic x2, mine Aluminum from cratered deposits, and plan safe runs for early repairs and tools.

Craft the Breathedge 2 Thumper with Metal x4 and Plastic x2, then use it only on large asteroid deposits that show the Thumper interaction prompt to collect Aluminum. It is an extraction tool for those crater-like deposits, not a weapon or a universal drill for every piece of debris. Make it soon after Scrap, use the Aluminum for the next active repair and Cutter recipe, and let the live object prompt override an older guide if the game changes.
Know what the Thumper is for
The Thumper solves the early Aluminum shortage. It does not open electrical panels, pipes, locks, or frozen objects: those interactions belong to other tools when their own icons appear. Its purpose is narrower, but that narrow purpose unlocks a material used repeatedly in the opening repair and crafting loop.
Confusion is understandable because the tool's shape and flavor text do not immediately explain its target. Treat it as a mining tool rather than trying it on every object in reach. Once you find a valid deposit, the interaction label is more dependable than appearance alone or a route from an older build.
Craft the Thumper before chasing Aluminum
The verified opening recipe is Metal x4 and Plastic x2. Gather the full cost, return to the train or an available workstation, and confirm the recipe card before committing the materials. During Early Access, the workstation display is the authority if a number differs from a recorded launch-build value.
The practical opening order is Scrap, Thumper, Aluminum, then Cutter. Scrap handles the locks, ice, and salvage that start the early loop; the Thumper then creates access to Aluminum; the Aluminum pays for the Cutter. Trying to build the Cutter first often creates the exact problem the Thumper is meant to solve, because its recipe needs Aluminum x4.
Find a deposit that accepts the Thumper
Search the larger asteroids around a safe, familiar route for pronounced crater-like formations rather than small loose wreckage. Slow down as you approach and rotate around the surface until the game identifies an interactable section. The correct target is the one that names the resource and displays the Thumper icon, not simply any rock that looks metallic.
Keep the station or another known landmark in view while learning a new deposit. Look back before harvesting so the return direction is familiar after you turn away from the asteroid. The map guide is useful for building these landmark chains, while the Aluminum locations guide focuses on the resource itself and its early uses.
Mine Aluminum without wasting an oxygen run
Leave with the Thumper equipped, several open inventory slots, and one precise target: the amount of Aluminum required by your next repair or tool. A focused trip prevents a long detour for unrelated salvage from using the oxygen and space reserved for the actual blocker. Once the prompt appears, harvest the deposit, confirm that Aluminum entered the inventory, and decide whether your return margin still supports another nearby target.
For an unfamiliar route, turn back before half of the oxygen reserve is gone. Reaching the deposit is only part of the journey; you still need time to identify the interaction, mine it, turn around, and navigate home. The survival guide explains why a safe return threshold is more useful than attempting to maximize every trip.
Spend the first Aluminum in the right order
Start by inspecting the active repair panel and the current workstation recipes. In the opening train sequence, Kettle Bobby and the Nutri-Pack-O-Mat together require Aluminum x6; the Cutter needs another Aluminum x4. Those known demands explain why the first stack disappears quickly even when the player has been mining successfully.
The Cutter is usually the next high-value use after the immediate train needs are clear. It opens marked electrical panels for Wires and appropriate pipes or station salvage for Duct Tape, Cardboard, Foam, and other materials. Read the Cutter guide after returning with Aluminum so you can reserve its full recipe instead of making repeated partial trips.
The Interphone and later antenna stages also require Aluminum, but do not collect their totals from memory. Inspect the live panel after every submitted stage because the listed requirement can change as the objective advances. The Interphone repair guide keeps the staged materials and route order together, while the recipe list helps compare shared costs before you spend.
Fix a Thumper that appears not to work
First, confirm that the Thumper is selected and that you are close enough to the interactive part of the deposit. Swinging at the broad surface of an ordinary asteroid or an unmarked piece of debris will not create a mining action. Reposition slowly and wait for the resource name and tool icon instead of continuing to use the tool without feedback.
If the prompt asks for another tool, follow that prompt rather than treating the Thumper as broken. Scrap, Cutter, Twister, and the Thumper each solve different object types, and a visually similar object can still belong to another tool's route. A missing prompt can also mean the item is scenery or that you are aiming at the wrong section of the same asteroid.
When the correct prompt appears but the result seems different from this guide, record the installed version, the object name, and the exact on-screen requirement. Do not overwrite a useful save or invent a workaround by attacking unrelated scenery. The game is in Early Access, so a clear in-game discrepancy is better evidence for a future correction than a remembered instruction from launch week.
Keep the Thumper in the tool chain
The Thumper is the bridge between basic salvage and the broader resource economy. Scrap begins the opening interactions; Thumper makes Aluminum dependable; Cutter converts that Aluminum into access to Wires and other salvage; Twister comes later, after its story requirement. Viewing the tools as a sequence makes it easier to choose the next craft when several recipes compete for the same inventory space.
Replace a badly worn Thumper before a long mining route when your current build's durability display makes that necessary. A tool that fails beside the correct deposit can turn a simple Aluminum shortage into two separate collection problems. Check the live recipe before crafting a replacement, then rebuild the reserve for the repair or tool you originally planned to complete.
Version and evidence note
The Thumper recipe, its Aluminum-deposit target, and its place in the opening tool chain were checked against the initial public Early Access build, 0.8.2, on September 1, 2026. This page was reviewed on September 15 alongside the official hotfix record through 0.8.9; that review does not claim that every older gathering route was replayed on the newer build. The live workstation and interaction prompt remain more current evidence than this launch-build reference.
Player discussions indicate that the tool's purpose is easy to miss, which is why this page concentrates on recognition, tool order, and a safe first mining loop rather than repeating a bare recipe row. Community reports identify a player problem but do not establish resource values, spawn counts, or mechanics on their own. Exact facts here are limited to the versioned in-game checks and the linked official patch context.
